MetroFlex 2211-NG Metro Broadband Gateway FAQ
What is the difference between MM2211-NG and MM2211-DZ?
Can I upgrade from MM2211-DZ to MM2211-NG?
No. The MM2211-DZ uses different software than the MM2211-NG. MM2211-DZ will continue to be able to receive any necessary firmware patches specific to the platform.
What antenna can I use to connect to the MM2211-EXT?
I have a MM2211-NG, how do I upgrade to the latest firmware?
The units have default settings for automatic firmware upgrade. When the unit boots up, it will first check for the latest firmware by contacting the firmware server. Ruckus Wireless hosts the automatic firmware server.
When can I use the L2TP function on my MM2211-NG?
What is the DHCP mode for Metro-NG clients when the unit is operating in bridge mode?
Metro-NG “forwards” all the DHCP requests coming from the clients to the Metro AP’s network.
We use Cisco 1500 series APs in the mesh network. Can we deploy Metro-NG in the bridge mode?
Current implementation of Cisco mesh AP does not allow the Metro-NG operating in bridge mode. You have to configure router mode on the Metro-NG when operating in a Cisco mesh network.
How do I restrict wireless clients from accessing Metro-NG?
You can configure WEP key or a WPA passphrase on “Home WLAN” so that only clients with that information can connect. Beyond that, Metro-NG provides MAC address based access control lists (ACLs) to allow or deny access to the wireless network. Go to Configuration → Access Controls to configure these settings. Note that these two security settings are independent of each other.
How to upload system log to a syslog server?
Go to Administrator → Log to specify the Syslog server’s IP address. If you don’t specify the Syslog server but enable the system log, you can see the system log messages since the machine is last rebooted.
How much memory space is allocated to store system log messages?
A total of 50 KB memory space is allocated for storing log messages. New messages will override existing messages once this space gets full.
Can I measure data rate from NOC to a Metro-NG unit?
Metro-NG comes with NUTTCP tool to help the network administrators measure the data rate to Metro-NG units. Go to Administrator → Management to enable the NUTTCP server.
Which 802.1x authentication methods are supported by Metro-NG?
Metro-NG supports both TLS and TTLS schemes to authenticate to the mesh network.
What is the default login info of the Metro-NG?
The default IP address of Metro-NG is 192.168.30.1. The default user name and password are “admin” and “password”. The default mode of Metro-NG is router mode.
I’ve forgotten my Metro-NG’s IP address, what do I do?
Perform a factory reset to set the device back to router mode. The default IP address becomes 192.168.30.1
How do I reset to factory defaults?
With the unit powered on, insert a paper clip into the reset button on the back of the device and hold it for 8 seconds. You don’t need to reboot after performing this task.
How do I know I am connected to the Metro ISP network?
Check the Status → Internet web page for Connection Status. If the Valid IP Address field says Success, you are connected to the Metro ISP network.
How does Metro-NG perform firmware upgrade?
The Metro-NG is pre-configured with the IP address of the automatic firmware server hosted by Ruckus Wireless. By default, for every 12 hours the Metro-NG will check for latest firmware. If the firmware on the device is older than what is currently available on the firmware server, the Metro-NG will automatically download and upgrade the firmware (in the background). The unit will reboot itself after the upgrade.
I cannot connect to the Internet, what should I do?
If you cannot connect to the Internet, ensure the following:
How do I obtain the support log from the Metro-NG?
The support log contains configuration, firmware, available network, and running processes information which can be very useful for the ISP to troubleshoot your connectivity problems. The support log can be obtained by going to Maintenance → Support Info from the web interface. You can either upload this information to the ISP’s ftp or TFTP server. Alternately this information can be copied to text file and emailed.
How do I determine version of the firmware running on Metro-NG?
The firmware version can be obtained on the Status → Device webpage. It is listed as Software Version.
Can I set static IP address on Metro-NG?
Make sure your Metro ISP allows static IP addresses on their clients. Static IP address can be set by going to Configuration → Internet webpage and selecting Static IP.
How can the service provider access Metro-NG using the web browser?
Metro-NG receives an IP address from the Metro ISP. The obtained IP address should be reachable from the ISP’s management center as long as the Allow Remote Management is checked on the Administrator → Management webpage.
Can I connect an external antenna to Metro-NG? What are the specifications?
If you have a MM2211-EXT model you can connect any omni or patch antenna to its external port. Make sure that the antenna gain doesn’t exceed 9 dBi. You have to also enable the external antenna by going to Configuration → Wireless webpage. The MM2211-EXT is certify by FCC to operate in the US.
Where can I buy Metro-NG?
See Where to Buy?
Is the Metro-NG compatible with a variety of outdoor mesh access points?
We have tested Metro-NG in router mode with Tropos, BelAir, SkyPilot, Cisco, Motorola, and Nortel APs. Metro-NG uses 802.11b/g standard based radio and it can work with other 802.11b/g standards based products.
Why am I re-directed to the Metro-NG’s webpage?
If your Metro-NG is operating in router mode and if the Internet connection is down you will be re-directed to Metro-NG’s webpage. You can click on the Login link to verify the wireless settings.
What do the signal bars for Air Quality indicate?
The Air Quality meter on the login and Device Status webpages indicate the received signal strength to noise ratio at the unit when communicating with a mesh AP.
The Air Quality to the number of bars mapping is as follows:
When the Internet connection goes down, can my wireless clients keep communicating with one another?
This is only possible when the Metro-NG operates in the router mode. In all other modes the ISP’s network provide the IP address to wireless clients. If the Internet connection goes down they will not have any IP address.
Why is the Ethernet port marked “WAN” on the back of Metro-NG used for?
Although it is marked as WAN port, it is an Ethernet port to which you can connect any network device and obtain an IP address. If you have MM2225-NG the WAN’s port behavior is same as rest of the network ports.
Why do I get ping response from 192.168.30.1 when I ping www.yahoo.com or any other website?
This happens when you are connected to the Metro-NG unit in router mode and WAN connection is down. When this happens, access the Metro-NG login webpage using the 192.168.30.1 IP address from your browser and verify wireless settings. If it doesn’t resolve the problem, check with your Metro ISP to see if there is any connectivity problem in their network.
I see the Flag Mode setting under Internet configuration what is this for?
Some ISP networks require DHCP Offer to be requested in broadcast mode, some require this Offer to be requested in unicast mode, and others honor both types of requests. You can select the suitable setting for your mesh network from the Configuration → Internet webpage. If you are not sure leave this setting at default Auto so that the Metro-NG can attempt broadcast Offer request first, if it fails to receive a DHCP address after 5 attempts it will automatically switch to unicast Offer request.
Can I still use the setup wizard to configure settings after the Metro-NG is up and running?
Metro-NG comes with Quick Start Wizard to help novice users with the setup. This feature can be accessed from a unit that is already configured by going to Configuration → Smart Configuration webpage.
Do you have recommendations for external antennas to go with MM221-EXT model?
You can find external antennas with RP-SMA connnectors at
http://metrix.net/9dbi-omni-rubber-duck-rpsma-p-51.html or http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/rpsma/rpsma_antkits.php.
Make sure the antenna gain does not exceed 9 dBi because of FCC regulations. If you are using RF cable between MetroFlex and the antenna you can subtract that loss from the antenna gain.
