Vocera badges and multicast

Summary

Vocera badges only work with unicast but do not work in multicast

Question

Why can I not do a conference call with my Vocera badges?

Customer Environment

9.12.2 w/ 7363, R710, 7982 and various Vocera badges

Root Cause

Multicast settings on the switches with IGMP snooping disabled. Multicast settings on the AP need to be modified.

Troubleshooting Steps

By default, multicast settings on the AP are the following:
eth0/eth1:
directed multicast = enabled
igmp snooping = enabled
wlan:
directed multicast = enabled
igmp snooping = enabled
But this configuration is not recommended by Vocera.  Vocera recommends disabling directed multicast.

We had disabled all of the above settings in the eth0/eth1 and VoIP WLAN to all APs, as below:
eth0/eth1:
directed multicast = disabled
igmp snooping = disabled
wlan:
directed multicast = disabled
igmp snooping = disabled
And this made the unicast work but not the multicast/conference calls
Customer tested multicast session, server/mc-client, with a SW called Multicast Hammer at the switch level and it worked, but the session did not work wirelessly from comp-to-comp.

We then enabled directed multicast and igmp snooping at the ethernet level and still the issue was there.
eth0/eth1:
directed multicast = disabled
igmp snooping = disabled
wlan:
directed multicast = enabled
igmp snooping = enabled

Workaround

N.A.

Resolution

After performing the above troubleshooting steps, the way that we got the Vocera badges to function were with the following setting and configuration:
eth0/eth1:
directed multicast = enabled
igmp snooping = enabled
wlan:
directed multicast = disabled
igmp snooping = enabled

Here's the command to disable directed multicast on the WLAN once the WLAN is loaded:
ruckus(config-wlan)# no qos directed-multicast
