SWIPE Application Cannot Connect to SmartZone (SZ) Through a Firewall
Summary
This article describes the firewall port requirements for communication between the SWIPE application and SmartZone (SZ). Connectivity issues can occur when the required ports are not permitted through a firewall. This article outlines the symptoms, root cause, troubleshooting steps, and required firewall configuration.Question
Why can't the SWIPE application connect to SmartZone (SZ) when only port 8443 is open on the firewall?
Customer Environment
SmartZone (SZ) controller SWIPE application 2.0 or later Firewall between the SWIPE application and SZ Remote administration or monitoring deploymentSymptoms
SWIPE application cannot connect to SZ
Login to SZ fails from the SWIPE application
Host is reported as unreachable
Remote management functions are unavailable
Root Cause
The firewall is blocking one or more ports required for communication between the SWIPE application and SZ. For SZ 3.0 and later, TCP port 7443 is required in addition to TCP port 8443. Communication may fail if either port is blocked.Troubleshooting Steps
- Verify the SZ software version.
- Confirm that TCP port 8443 is open between the SWIPE application and SZ.
- If running SZ 3.0 or later, verify that TCP port 7443 is also open.
- Review firewall rules and access control lists (ACLs) for blocked traffic.
- Test connectivity to ports 8443 and 7443 from the client network.
- Retest connectivity using the SWIPE application.
Workaround
If the SWIPE application and SZ are located on the same network and communication does not traverse the firewall, the application may connect successfully without modifying firewall policies.
Resolution
Configure the firewall to allow the required TCP ports between the SWIPE application and SmartZone (SZ).
| SZ Version | Required Port(s) | Protocol | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| SZ 2.5 | 8443 | TCP | SWIPE login and communication |
| SZ 3.0 and later | 8443 and 7443 | TCP | SWIPE login and communication |
Note: For SZ 3.0 and later releases, TCP port 7443 is required in addition to TCP port 8443.
