Fixing RUCKUS Switch with an Amber/Orange light on "SYST" & Green light on "PWR" & NO lights on APs

Summary

If your RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch stopped working after a power outage or power spike, it may be stuck in what’s called boot mode. In this state, the switch fails to start up normally and will not supply power (PoE - Power over Ethernet) to connected devices like RUCKUS Access Points (APs) or any other devices.

Question

How to fix RUCKUS Switch with an Amber/Orange light on "SYST" & Green light on "PWR" & NO power on Celling Access Points

Customer Environment

• Product: RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch • Software Version: Most common in devices running Non-Unified Forwarding Image (Non-UFI) firmware, especially versions older than 08.0.80f

Symptoms

How to Identify the Problem:

Look for these mentioned signs:

Diagnostic Pictures:

Figure 2 : Shows no LED activity on the ceiling-mounted Access Points, as the Switch stuck in boot mode is unable to transmit power through its ports

Root Cause

When the switch reboots due to a power interruption or electrical surge, it may fail to load its software correctly, causing it to enter boot mode. In this mode, it can’t deliver power or manage network traffic.

Troubleshooting Steps

Solution 1: Try a Physical Reset Using a Paper Clip

This method is quick and works in many cases.

Steps:

1. Unplug the switch from the power outlet.

2. Prepare a paper clip or small pin.

3. Hold down the reset button (on the front of the switch) using the paper clip.

4. While holding the button, reconnect the power to the switch.

5. Wait for all the LEDs to flash amber, then release the reset button.

Important Notes:

  • You may need to repeat this reset 35-40 times, as it has worked for many users after multiple attempts.
  • When successful, both SYST and PWR lights will turn GREEN.

Solution 2: Perform a Software Recovery (if reset fails)

If the paper clip reset does not work, the switch’s internal software (called the "image") may be corrupted, and you'll need to reinstall it using a computer.

 What You’ll Need:

  • USB Type-C to USB cable
  • An Ethernet cable (RJ45 to RJ45)
  • Windows or Mac computer – (Windows Laptop is preferred)

Recovery Steps Overview:

1. Connect the switch to your computer using both the USB-C and Ethernet cables.

2. Follow the software recovery instructions step-by-step from the official guide.

3. This process will reload the correct system image onto the switch.

Once completed, your switch should restart successfully, and both SYST and PWR lights will be green.

Helpful Resources:

Resolution

  • Perform a physical reset using a paper clip – This forces the switch to reboot properly and can restore normal operation if it is stuck in boot mode.

  • Repeat the reset procedure multiple times (35–40 attempts) – Multiple reset cycles may be needed because the switch may not exit boot mode on the first few attempts.

  • Perform a software recovery using a computer (USB-C + Ethernet) – This reinstalls the correct system image on the switch when the internal firmware becomes corrupted.

  • Use Windows laptop for recovery when possible – Windows provides more reliable driver compatibility for the RUCKUS recovery utilities.

  • Follow the official recovery guide step-by-step – Using the validated instructions ensures the correct image is loaded and prevents further boot issues.
