Establishing Console CLI Access on the RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch

Summary

When the RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch's IP address cannot be retrieved to access the Command Line Interface (CLI), the alternative method is to connect via a Console cable between the Switch and a laptop/Computer. The following RUCKUS Lennar Knowledge Base self-help article provides step-by-step instructions on how to access the CLI using a Console cable connection.

Question

How to establish Console CLI Access on the RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch?

Customer Environment

• Product(s): RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch. Console Access Setup Requirements: • Console Cable (RJ45 to RJ45 or USB to RJ45, depending on your laptop/PC serial port). • Terminal Emulation Software (e.g., PuTTY) • Laptop or PC with a serial port or USB-to-RJ45 adapter.

Symptoms

  • Unable to access the switch GUI or CLI using its IP address.

  • Switch IP address is unknown or not reachable.

  • No response when attempting SSH or web login.

  • Need to troubleshoot switch through physical console access.

  • Device requires serial/console login for recovery or configuration.

Troubleshooting Steps

You will need one of the following cables:

A USB console cable with a Type-C connector: One end should have a USB Type-C connector, and the other end should be a standard USB (Type-A) connector. (Figure 1)

OR

A serial console cable with an RJ-45 connector: You can use a cable with RJ-45 connectors on both ends. Alternatively, a cable with an RJ-45 connector on one end and a standard USB (Type-A) connector on the other, depending on the available port on your laptop. (Figure 2)

Step-by-Step Instructions :

Step 1: Locate and Connect the Console Cable

The port you use will depend on the type of console cable you are using. Either Port 1 or Port 15, as shown in Figure 3.

Connect the console cable to the appropriate console port on the device (either port number 1 or 15, depending on the type of cable you are using), and plug the other end into a USB/Ethernet port on your Laptop/Computer.

Step 2 : Download and Install the RUCKUS Switch Drivers:

To access the device via the console, a driver must be installed so that your workstation (PC, desktop, or laptop) can recognize the console cable.

Please follow the steps below:

1. Download the ZIP file from the following link: Brocade / Ruckus 7150 USB Serial driver Windows

2. Once downloaded, right-click the ZIP file and select “Extract All.” (Figure 6)

3. After extracting the files, run the installer to install the driver.

Refer to the Figure 5 for visual guidance:

You also need the USB-to-UART bridge driver (Figure 7), which can be downloaded from: CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers

Refer to the Figure 7 for visual guidance:

Step 3 : Install CLI/Terminal Software

Download and install a CLI/terminal emulation program:

  • If you don’t have PuTTY installed, download it here:
    PuTTY for Windows
  • Launch the PuTTy software on your Laptop/PC.

Step 4 : Configure PuTTy  Software Settings

Set up the CLI/terminal connection in the software to match the correct serial parameters for the RUCKUS ICX Switch:

The COM port number entered in the “Serial line” field will vary depending on your system's Device Manager configuration.

To identify the correct COM port:

1. Open Device Manager on your computer.

2. Expand the “Ports (COM & LPT)” section. (Figure 8 & 9)

3. Look for a device listed as “Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COMx)” the COMx value (e.g., COM3, COM5) indicates the correct port to use.

4. For example, in PuTTY: (Figure 10)

    • Choose "Serial" as the connection type.
    • Enter the correct COM port number (e.g., COM3, COM5).

5. Click "Open" or “Start” to initiate the connection.

Refer to the Figure 8 & 9 for visual guidance:

Step 5: Accessing PuTTy  CLI:

Once you open PuTTY, you will see a screen similar to Figure 11. Press Enter to initiate the session.
