Enable Wireless Client Isolation and Whitelist gateway

Summary

Steps to enable Wireless Client isolation on a WLAN and whitelist only the default gateway

Question

How can I enable Wireless Client Isolation?
Why do user devices drop traffic on network after client isolation is enabled?

Customer Environment

vSZ 6.1 and above

Symptoms

Users lose access to gateway or drop from network after wireless client isolation is enabled.

Resolution

Wireless Client Isolation can be enabled on a WLAN where we do not want users communicating with each other within the local network and the goal is to only allow them access to the internet. This feature is ideal for guest networks.

Follow the below steps to configure Wireless Client Isolation on a WLAN
  • Login to vSZ > Network > Wireless > Wireless LAN > Choose the WLAN where you want to enable Wireless Client isolation.
  • Click the WLAN > Click 'Configure' > Scroll down to find "Wireless Client Isolation" > Enable the radio button.

  • Unicast packet isolation is enabled by default. Meaning any traffic destined to a specific mac address within the network is going to get isolated.
  • Click the '+' icon of the Isolation Whitelist to add an exception device in the whitelist. The default gateway, or other services like printers can be added to this list.

  • The auto whitelist radio button can be enabled, where the gateway IP is automatically detected and whitelisted.
  • Alternatively the gateway IP address and MAC address can be manually added to the list by clicking 'Create' under 'Client entries'.
  • Any other exceptions like printers can be added into this list if required.

If the gateway information is not correctly whitelisted, then clients connecting to the WLAN will face issues with accessing the network/ internet.
