How to perform a Switch upgrade using Web Interface GU(ICX7150 Switch)

This article provides a step-by-step guide on upgrading a switch from a non-UFI version to the recommended 08.0.95g UFI version using TFTP server and Web GUI Interface(browser)

Switch upgrade using Web Interface GU(ICX7150 Switch)

Customer Environment

Product(s) : RUCKUS ICX-7150-C12P Switch Hardware requirement : A Windows computer.

Symptoms

The switch is experiencing intermittent reboot cycles due to firmware instability.

APs are losing power and dropping connections, indicating outdated PoE firmware.

Web GUI performance degradation was observed due to old non-UFI firmware.

The switch is showing stacking instability that is resolved in the recommended firmware.

Root Cause

• Running a Non-UFI Firmware Version • APs losing power/ Stability issues • Compatibility with newer devices • Corrupted Firmware or Upgrade Failure

Troubleshooting Steps

Steps to upgrade

A. Initial version upgrade:

When upgrading from a non-UFI version, we must first upgrade to the initial version (08.0.80f) before proceeding to the recommended version (08.0.95g).

The Upgrade path would be: Non-UFI version before 08.0.80f version>>08.0.80f>>08.0.95g

1. Download and unzip the initial version 08.0.80f

2. Navigate to the ICX 7150>Boot folder and copy mnz10114.bin

3. Navigate to the ICX 7150>Images folder and copy SPS08080f.bin

B. Download 08.0.95g version images:

1. Log in to the RUCKUS Support Downloads page.

2. Select RUCKUS ICX7150 Campus Switches from the ‘Choose A Product’ menu.

3. Select 08.0 from the Version menu.

4. Select RUCKUS ICX FastIron 08.0.95g (GA) Software Release (.zip).

5. Click Download software.

6. Unzip the downloaded file and extract all contents.

7. Navigate to the ICX 7150 > Images folder and copy SPS08095gufi.bin and paste in the same folder we created previously.

8. Create a new folder named Upgrade and copy the following files into it: mnz10114.bin,  SPS08080f.bin, and SPS08095gufi.bin.

C. Download application: TFTP Server

TFTP application server is needed for file transfer. 

1. Download a TFTP server application, which will be used to transfer firmware files to the switch during the upgrade process.

D. Finding IP address of the Switch:

There are two primary methods for discovering a switch's IP address: using the Command Prompt or a dedicated network management application.

2This is alternate process if you do not find the IP Address using IP Scanner Application described in the Point 1.Click Start button and type cmd and open Command prompt. Type the command arp -a. The switch's IP and MAC addresses can be viewed in the Command Prompt. To identify the switch, match the MAC address listed in the output with the one printed on the label affixed to the switch.

Now, we have the IP address of the Ruckus Switch. 

E. Setting up TFTP server for upgrade:

1. Open the TFTP64 application by typing tftp in the Start button.

2. Use the command prompt to find the Computer’s IP address using the command ipconfig. Now, we have the IP address of the computer.

3. Once the TFTP server is opened, you can use the IP address of the computer under the Server interfaces. Click Browse and open the folder where the upgrade files are saved.

F. Accessing the Interface for Upgrade

1. Open the Web browser (like Google Chrome) and enter the Switch IP address in the address bar  of your Web browser.   If your IP address is 10.176.199.49, enter that IP address in the address bar of your Web browser.

2.   Hit “Login” when you observe the Switch dashboard.

3.    If the credentials are unknown, please refer to the guide below for the default login credentials.

Now, you gained access to the Switch dashboard.

G. Configuring for initial version upgrade

1. Navigate to the Command section in the left pane, then go to TFTP > Configuration > TFTP Configuration.

Enter the required information:

  • TFTP Server IP:  IP address of your computer, which you have configured in the TFTP application.
  • Image file name: mnz10114.bin
  • Select Copy from Server to Flash, then click Save and confirm by selecting Yes.

2. In the left pane, click on Command, then navigate to TFTP > Image > TFTP Image

Enter the required information

  • TFTP Server IP:  IP address of your computer, which you have configured in the TFTP application.
  • Image file name: SPS08080f.bin
  • Flash: Primary
    Select Copy from Server, then click Save and confirm by selecting Yes.

H. Configuring for Recommended version Upgrade:

1. In the left pane, click on Command, then navigate to TFTP > Image > TFTP Image.

Enter the required information

  • TFTP Server IP:  IP address of your computer, which you have configured in the TFTP application.
  • Image file name: SPS08095gufi.bin
  • Flash: Primary
    Select Copy from Server, then click Save and confirm by selecting Yes.

I. Synchronizing the Partitions

For best results, we recommend having both partitions with the same version.

1. In the left pane, click on Command, then navigate to TFTP > Image > TFTP Image.

Enter the required information:

  • TFTP Server IP:  IP address of your computer, which you have configured in the TFTP application.
  • Image file name: SPS08095gufi.bin
  • Flash: Secondary
    Select Copy from Server, then click Save and confirm by selecting Yes.

J. Reloading the Switch to complete the Upgrade

1. In the left pane, click on Command, then navigate to Reload

Click Yes for “Do you really want to reload?”

 Now, the Switch is upgraded to the Recommended version 08095g.
