Summary

Macbook has a inbuilt utility called "sniffer" to take OTA captures using it's WLAN card. Same can be utilised for troubleshooting WiFi issues.

How to use Macbook to take Over the Air (OTA) capture?

Customer Environment

Anyone who has a Macbook running OS X 10.6 or above and want to use it to capture Over The Air (OTA) WiFi captures for WiFi troubleshooting.

Resolution

How to setup:

1. Power up the Macbook (make sure Macbook is running OS X 10.6 or above).

2. Press "command" or "cmd" + "Space" key on keyboard to open search box and type "Wireless Diagnostics", open Wireless Diagnostics utility.

3. Now go to Menu option on top of the screen and click on "Window" menu and select "Sniffer".

4. You will see the Sniffer window post clicking on sniffer from Window menu options.

5. Now Click on channel drop down option and select the channel on which you want to capture the OTA captures.

6. Now hit start button, once you click on "Start", it will ask for admin password so make sure you have it.

7. Now keep the captures running for required amount of time and then hit stop, a file with ".wcap" extension will be saved on your Macbook's desktop.

To verify the captures, use any packet capture analysis utility like Wireshark.
